Harold R. Oberheu, 82, of rural Sumner, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Tripoli Nursing & Rehab.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2015, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli with Rev. Scott Duffus officiating. Interment will follow in Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tripoli. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 9th at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made in his name to Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, Tripoli Nursing & Rehab, or Cedar Valley Hospice in Waverly.
Harold Romain, son of William and Martha Bockhaus Oberheu, was born March 15, 1933, in Bremer County, Iowa. He was baptized April 2, 1933, at Western Douglas, and confirmed on March 21, 1948, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. On September 19, 1959, he was united in marriage with Esther Mae Buchholz at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville, Iowa. He farmed in Bremer County until December of 1980. He was later employed at Fredericksburg Farmers Coop prior to retiring in 1998. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed collecting models of draft horses and show wagons and also loved following the Chicago Cubs.
In addition to his wife, Esther of Sumner, Harold is survived by three daughters, Jane (Dale) Petersen of Fredericksburg, Carol (William) O’Brien of Sumner, and Elaine (Randy) Hammitt of Fairbank; seven grandchildren, Kimberly (Josh) Meyer, Brandon (Julie Stange) Petersen, Andrew and Emily O’Brien, Jacob, Maria, and Jenna Hammitt; two step-grandchildren, Natasha (Jeff) Allen, and Nick Hammitt; two great-grandchildren, Jonah and Hattie Meyer; two step-great-grandchildren, Paxton and Oliva Allen; one brother, David (Lois) Oberheu of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Leota Oberheu of Waterloo; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edgar (Darlys) Oberheu, and Lester Oberheu, and two brothers, who died in infancy.
